Product review – Lucaris Desire Collection

Details : June 2015 by Dr Nara Decharin, an academic turned healthcare executive based in Bangkok with his personal enthusiasm for wine and stemware in a fun and contemporary way

The natural response to yet a new range of Desire stemware aimed at simplifying the glass selection process is surely to be inquisitive of whether we are heading back the ‘wrong’ way?

The new range from Lucaris is really simple and the advertising is honest. The aim was indeed to simplify the stemware selection process by having only six shapes; two glasses each for red and white, one for universal use, and one for a sparkling. The range of six shapes is extremely intuitive and immediately obvious. Within the six, I found that some of the glasses had five curl lines inside the bowl, which are part of a patented technology named Aerlumer®, designed to encourage micro-oxidation of the wine with every swirl. What is visually impressive is the manufacturing capability that successfully integrates the curl lines into the bowl without compromising the quality, clarity and brilliance of the lead-free crystal.

My favourite two from the entire range were curvaceous Sparkling, and the rather grand-looking Robust Red with Aerlumer®. Both of these shapes have turnip openings and tall bowls, which I consider to be a unique design for lead-free crystal. In fact, I was so overwhelmed by their aesthetics that I spent more time swirling and looking at the glasses than drinking from them. The remainder of the range – the Elegant Red, Rich White, Crisp White, and Universal – are very instinctive and one would naturally be able to select any of these glasses to match with almost any wine one intends to serve.
